Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Tunes soundchecked but never performed in concert

Hello: The following may or may not interest you. I found it over at Alex Allan's web site [http://www.whitegum.com/intro.htm] -- see table of contents on left column

Soundchecks
The following is a list of songs that were soundchecked by the Dead but seemingly never played live.

1 December 1973

Blue Suede Shoes
Workin' Man Blues

12 December 1973
Rip It Up
Blue Suede Shoes
30 Days

31 December 1976
River Deep, Mountain High

31 December 1980
Young Blood
[Apparently peformed during an acoustic soundcheck]

23 March 1986
I Heard It Through The Grapevine

24 March 1993
Whiskey In The Jar (studio rehearsal version now released on "So Many Roads (1965-95)")

28 March 1993
Whiskey In The Jar (again)
Alabama Bound

25 June 1993
Ain't That Peculiar

16 September 1994
Start Me Up
[Evidence for this is r.m.gd posting: not confirmed]

22 March 1995
Watchin' The Wheels

26 March 1995
When A Man Loves A Woman
One Way Out
Neighbor, Neighbor
Paperback Writer
Please, Please, Please
[Note that the last song is the James Brown song, not the Beatles "Please, Please Me".]

24 May 1995
Tough Mama

2 July 1995
Hoochie Coochie Man

"I have spent my life
Seeking all that's still unsung
Bent my ear to hear the tune
And closed my eyes to see
When there were no strings to play
You played to me...,"

A bit off topic, but the Dylan-Dead rehearsals are full of odd oddities that never saw the stage. Personally, I think they should have run with Boy In The Bubble just for all the minds that would have been melted.

I'm pretty sure there is some soundcheck audio of the aint that peculiar on this site. I remember seeing that and was very intrigued. From what i remember and I could be wrong, I think Jerry was kind of an ass about it or at the very least kind of lazy about the whole concept of learning the tune.

Hoochie Coochie Man? Even though this was at the end, I'd like to hear that. Course, could be like a car accident, one just has to have a look. Hearing Pig do it would have been more approp. but...Fun post.

Yup, that's it. In one breath Jer says to Vince, "if we're going to take the time to learn a new tune let's do something great." In his next breath to Hornsby, "you know we're doing I Fought the Law." Because when I think of "greatness" the IFTL encore sticks out in my mind. C'mon Jerry, an Aint That Peculiar breakout at the end of the tour in a giant stadium would have pretty neat for those folks.

Ashes,

During the 12-12-73 soundcheck when they played blue suede shoes they also played Sleigh Ride. I could not find any evidence this was played during a show.

more of a tease during tuning so maybe it doesn't really count, fun to listen to though.

Some of these would have worked ( Grapevine?), some of these would have been embarrassing ( River Deep, When A Man Loves A Woman ). Again, It would deepened on which era they did them in , and what they brought to the table . I always though "Last Time", was a bad idea , AWESOME song by the Stones, tepid garage music form our boys . They just didn't bring anything too interesting to it.
